In 1984 the pack was chartered by the Taft Elementary PTA. In 1988, the PTA dropped us because of the Boy Scout policy over the Gay Rights issue, youth protection training, and background checks. This was not a local PTA policy, but was recommended by the National PTA. Rawline Judice was president of the Taft PTA at that time. Most local PTAs dropped the chartering of scout units, with the exception of Ridgewood Elementary in Port Neches. Pack 119 is still chartered by them. For the next year, we still met at Taft Elementary and we rechartered as Taft Parents Group. In 1989, Mike LeBoeuf became Cub Master even though his son was in his last year of Cub Scouts. He was working for Park Place Hospital, and got them to become the charter organization for the Pack, since Mike was an ORT there. They opened their facility to hold our Pack Meetings. During this time, the dens were meeting at the Den Leaders' homes. Mike stepped down when his son crossed over, and Louis Devillier became Cubmaster. The charter moved to Immaculate Conception, where Monsignor Enderly and Erney Hunt (Scoutmaster at Troop 86) were most helpful. Louis stayed on until his youngest of 3 sons crossed over. About 1995, Johnny Hunt (Erney John Hunt), became the Cub Master. Johnny is the son of Erney Hunt's (Scoutmaster of Troop 86). That is when the charter was moved to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Groves. The dens met at the church. While Johnny was Cub Master, he changed the numerical designation from 287 to 86, and Pack 287 ceased to exist. In 2000, Pack 287 was restarted, chartered at the New Song Assembly of God Church on the corner of Main and Hwy 73 in Groves. Harry Leverett was the first Cub Master there. Harry and his wife Cyndy as well as Holly Pennington were all Cubmasters with the Pack through 2005, when Kim Hoyt took over. In 2004, the Pack moved to First Methodist in Groves hosted by Reverend Bill Jobe, Jr. Succeeding Pastor Alan Van Hooser strongly supported the religious emblems program, helping numerous boys achieve God and Me and God and Family. Combine with 86, split apart when round up more than 80 boys. After 3 hurricanes in 4 years decimated scout leadership council-wide, at the end of 2009 the Leaders of Pack 86 and Pack 287 agreed to merge. This was a complementary event, since Pack 287 had few young Cub Scouts and Pack 86 had few older Cub Scouts, resulting in strong dens at each rank. |
